Methodology
Calculating the Enervee Score.
The higher the Enervee Score, the more efficient that product is, relative to all other relevant products in its category. Normalized across categories, the Enervee Score enables consumers to instantly see and understand the model-specific energy performances for any possible purchase. It is reviewed and refreshed daily — for every product category.
Using the full range of the 0–100 scale, the Enervee Score maps every product with its specific score. All but the best 10% of products score between 0 and 90, with specific bands for easy recognition. For the top 10% of products in each category, we reserve the 90–100 range — Ideal — making it easier still to pick the best appliance for the home.

What is the Enervee Score and how is it calculated?
A 0–100 rating of a product's energy efficiency relative to every other product in its category. It is normalised across categories, so a 90 means the same thing on a refrigerator as on a television, and it is recalculated daily for thousands of models across more than 40 categories.
What is the difference between the Choice Engine and the Enervee Score?
The Enervee Score rates one product's energy efficiency 0–100. The Choice Engine is the system that puts it to work: it ranks every model in a category by Score, price and available incentives, so the most relevant efficient option surfaces first instead of the customer having to sort for it. The Score is the rating; the Choice Engine is what acts on it.
Why not just use ENERGY STAR?
ENERGY STAR is a threshold: a product either meets it or it does not, and within the qualifying set there is no way to tell a modest performer from an excellent one. The Enervee Score® is continuous and relative, so it separates every model in a category. It is also independent of federal standards, which matters when those standards are under review.
How often is it updated, and across how many categories?
Daily, across more than 40 product categories and thousands of models. Daily matters because the distribution moves — a model that was above average two years ago may not be now, and a score that is not refreshed quietly stops being true.
Is the Enervee Score independent of federal efficiency standards?
Yes. It rates products against the current market distribution in their category rather than against a regulatory threshold, so it does not move when a federal standard is revised or withdrawn.
What evidence is there that showing a Score changes what people buy?
